What Are Desiccant Breathers?

A desiccant breather is a device used to prevent moisture and dust from entering equipment such as transformers, hydraulics, gearboxes, and oil tanks.

It allows air to move in and out as the equipment heats up and cools down, while a desiccant such as silica gel absorbs moisture from the incoming air. This helps protect the oil and internal components from water contamination, corrosion, and deterioration.

GIEBEL uses a high-performance desiccant blend of silica gel orange-green and Molecular Sieve 13X. This combination delivers superior drying performance at high temperatures and low humidity, keeping the system significantly drier throughout its service life.

GIEBEL adsorbers are designed with refillable/rechargeable housings. Once the desiccant is saturated—indicated by a clear real-time color change from orange to green—all internal wear components can be replaced at low cost.
