In the demanding world of maritime operations, hydraulic system failures can lead to costly downtime and operational inefficiencies. This was precisely the challenge faced by Dalmore S.A., a shipowner based in Gdynia, Poland, when their fishing trawler, m/t ATRIA, encountered severe hydraulic issues. However, a strategic investment in an offline filtration system provided a lasting solution.

The Problem:

The central hydraulic system on m/t ATRIA had a capacity of 3,500 liters, utilizing Castrol HYSPIN AWHM 68 oil. Over time, the vessel’s engineers noticed performance issues—hanging valves and trapped pistons—which hampered operations.

Upon investigation, the root cause was traced to high oxidation levels and excessive particle contamination. The oil had turned black, indicating severe degradation. Without intervention, these conditions could lead to expensive component failures and prolonged vessel downtime.

The Solution:

To combat these issues, the shipowner installed a CJC™ Fine Filter HDU 27/54 MZ, featuring a pump flow rate of 590 L/h and utilizing CJC™ Filter Insert B 2 x 27/27 (3 μm absolute). This advanced offline oil filtration system was designed to work continuously, ensuring the removal of harmful contaminants and extending the lifespan of both the oil and the hydraulic system.

The Results:

Clean Oil, Reliable Performance! Following 10 months of continuous filtration, the improvements were undeniable:

Oil cleanliness improved dramatically from ISO 4406 21/20/17 to 15/14/9.

The hydraulic system operated smoothly, eliminating valve hang-ups and piston issues.

Vessel engineers could now focus on other critical maintenance tasks without worrying about hydraulic failures.

Why Offline Filtration is Essential for Marine Hydraulics

This case highlights the importance of offline filtration for hydraulic systems, particularly in harsh marine environments where contamination risks are high. By implementing a CJC™ Fine Filter, the shipowner not only restored system reliability but also ensured long-term cost savings through extended oil and component life.

For vessel operators facing similar challenges, investing in offline filter technology is a proactive step toward maximizing operational efficiency and reducing unexpected downtime. Clean oil means a cleaner, more reliable system—ensuring smooth sailing for years to come.
